Chlamydia Treatment for Adults and Infants

chlamydia treatment, immediate chlamydia test results

Chlamydia is a curable STD. A complete course of antibiotics is enough to wipe off the infection completely. Whether you are HIV negative or positive, treatment for chlamydia is the same. However, the dose of antibiotics may differ.

The doctor might prescribe you a one-time dose, or he or she may prescribe a course of treatment that lasts five, seven, or ten days. In some cases, you may need to take medication more than once a day.

During the treatment

During your chlamydia treatment, you must not have sex. Once the treatment is complete, consult your doctor and resume your sexual activity only when he or she gives the nod.

Remember

Never share your chlamydia medications with anybody. It is important that your partner also undergoes a chlamydia test and take the treatment, if needed. This is because if he or she is infected, you will get the infection again after treatment.

According to doctors, medications meant to treat chlamydia infection can erase the infection, but not repair any damage done to the body organs due to the infection.

For example, when chlamydia is not treated for a long time, it can lead to infertility. However, it is not possible to reverse this damage through treatment.

You must keep in touch with your doctor during the course of treatment. If after completion of the treatment, you still experience symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Do not miss any dose of antibiotics. Complete the full course. Only then can you expect the infection to be cured fully.

Re-test

For those who successfully complete chlamydia treatment, the doctor may ask them to undergo a re-test after three months. This is to make sure you have absolutely no infection left in your system.

Treating chlamydia in infants

Infants can get chlamydia from their mothers during delivery. Infected babies usually develop pneumonia and/or ophthalmia neonatorum (conjunctivitis). In babies too, chlamydia can be treated through antibiotics.

Doctors insist pregnant women to undergo STD testing during their first pre-natal visit to make sure they have no infection. If they are found infected, they can immediately start the course of antibiotics and save their baby from getting the infection.

Immediate chlamydia test results are available at your nearest urgent care clinic. Not only this, the clinic provides testing and treatment on the same day. You can also do testing and billing anonymously, if you so want.
